Social Media Targeting

A few years ago I tried Facebook advertising and I was underwhelmed. Oh how things have moved on since then. The targeting available is fantastic, opening up specific audiences to tailored messages just like Adwords.

We recently ran a low level campaign for a Gershwin concert and targeted a specific ad campaign, with an incentive to click (or like) action in the ad copy – the best thing about it though was the ability to target people who have recently mentioned Gershwin on their pages – BRILLIANT.

targetFacebook is a very powerful marketing and PR tool for many reasons, but for the targeting reasons alone it’s a PR person’s dream. Mass media still has its place but you just can’t ignore the implications and power of the social networking platforms.

At Leader we are increasingly working with our clients to harness the power of social networking, from Facebook apps and advertising campaigns through to creative Twitter activity.

Google +1

Google has launched it’s +1 social search tool and it is really quite exciting. The implications for SEO are pretty signifcant as Google moves towards a much more personalised search for its users. And when you couple it with the recent integration of Twitter tweets to your search results then social media becomes even more important.

Each search result will show you how many people in your network have +1′d a link and also if any of your Twitter friends have tweeted the link. Very cool! Give it a go for youself with our +1 button below.

Find your target with Facebook

I am always amazed at how targeted online activity can be, but a recent Facebook ad campaign for our client Raymond Gubbay surpassed my expectations. As part of their social media programme we are promoting a wonderful George Gershwin Extravaganza called Strictly Gershwin.Part of the campaign includes a competition on Facebook to win tickets to the Royal Albert Hall concert this June (working within the strict Facebook guidelines I blogged about recently of course).

To get things moving we set up a low level advert campaign on FB. I went through the usual targeting questions and identified an audience for the ads but when I got to ‘interests’ I thought I’d see how specific I could get and was pleasantly surprised at the results. I was able to select nearly 1000 people who lived in London and liked George Gershwin – result! The campaign has only been running for 12 hours now but we’ve already added 9 friends to our page at a very low cost indeed. The trick to successful FB advertising is clearly targeting and relevant content with an incentive to click. Check out the Raymond Gubbay Facebook page for yourself and if you are quick you can still enter the Strictly Gershwin competition.
